It’s the time of year for cleaning ditches and cutting hedges. Here’s an interesting image from some recent work.

Zoom in and you’ll see the strata of sediment that has built up since this was last cleaned; the fact that circa 10” of material needed removing shows this was ...hampering the good operation of field drains upstream; some of these fields had suffered from poor drainage in recent years and this will have been a contributing factor.

Incidentally, the water upstream of the bridge accumulated from just 200 metres or so of ditch length (nothing flowed in from further up stream), so apart from a smattering of rain falling directly into the ditch, this is all groundwater.
